I try not to read too much because I get emotional and upset about decisions and statements made from elected officials that pledge to serve the ones that elect them. I started writing this post this morning when I first heard of Obama’s plans to speak to my children next week via a public address, while they are in school. At that time only a couple websites were reporting it so I was digging and searching for more information. The more I searched, the more upset I became. This is unprecidented. Even according to the education secretarty who said “This is the first time an American president has spoken directly to the nation’s school children about persisting and succeeding in school.”
At first, the Department of Education’s website stated
As one of the preparatory materials for teachers provided by the Department of Education, students had been asked to, “Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president.”
Maybe he means “talk to mommy and daddy and tell them everyone is entitled to health care.” I am not sure, and I will never know because later this afternoon they changed the wording and actually took that sentence off the Dept of Ed website. It now reads:
“Write letters to themselves about how they can achieve their short‐term and long‐term education goals.”
Ahhh, much better…right? Wrong. If you visit the DOE website, it gives a handout for teachers on what they should do with students before and after the speech. As I was reading it, I got this sick, sinking feeling in my stomach. Reading statements such as
Why is it important that we listen to the president and other elected officials?
What is the president trying to tell me?
What is the president asking me to do?
What new ideas and actions is the president challenging me to think about?
What specific job is he asking me to do?
Is he asking anything of anyone else?
Teachers? Principals? Parents? The American people?
What do you think the president wants us to do?
Does the speech make you want to do anything?
Are we able to do what President Obama is asking of us?
The White House assures us this will not be a speech to push his liberal agenda. But in reading the questions above, how can it NOT be a speech pushing his agenda? The questions ask for specific examples of what our children think the president wants, and what the president wants their mommy and daddy to do. They can only know this if he says this. And I don’t think he is going to say “I want a free market society with limited government, I want God put back in everything it has been taken out of, I want the War on Terror to be back ON, and I want to get rid of every communist I have surrounded myself with”
No, somehow I don’t think that is the point he will make during his speech to MY, to YOUR children next week.
This is the letter sent to all school principals around the country from the Dept of Education.
Dear Principal:
In a recent interview with student reporter, Damon Weaver, President Obama announced that on September 8 — the first day of school for many children across America — he will deliver a national address directly to students on the importance of education. The President will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning. He will also call for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents and educators to ensure that every child in every school receives the best education possible so they can compete in the global economy for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives as American citizens.
Since taking office, the President has repeatedly focused on education, even as the country faces two wars, the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression and major challenges on issues like energy and health care. The President believes that education is a critical part of building a new foundation for the American economy. Educated people are more active civically and better informed on issues affecting their lives, their families and their futures.
This is the first time an American president has spoken directly to the nation’s school children about persisting and succeeding in school. We encourage you to use this historic moment to help your students get focused and begin the school year strong. I encourage you, your teachers, and students to join me in watching the President deliver this address on Tuesday, September 8, 2009. It will be broadcast live on the White House website http://www.whitehouse.gov 12:00 noon eastern standard time.
In advance of this address, we would like to share the following resources: a menu of classroom activities for students in grades preK-6 and for students in grades 7-12. These are ideas developed by and for teachers to help engage students and stimulate discussion on the importance of education in their lives. We are also staging a student video contest on education. Details of the video contest will be available on our website http://www.ed.gov in the coming weeks.
On behalf of all Americans, I want to thank our educators who do society’s most important work by preparing our children for work and for life. No other task is more critical to our economic future and our social progress. I look forward to working with you in the months and years ahead to continue improving the quality of public education we provide all of our children.
Sincerely,
Arne Duncan
Parents are outraged, rightfully so. My children are tracked out next week. But I have already contacted their teacher so I can be assured this will not be recorded and played back to them when they track back in. If it will be, I will elect to keep them out of school that day, using the following excuse that someone on another blog suggested:
To Whom it May Concern:
When it comes to teaching my child about personal responsibility and life goals, I have determined that I am a far better teacher of those objectives than a President who has chosen to surround himself with known anarchists and terrorists.
Therefore, <insert child’s name> will be at home on Sept 8th in order not to be corrupted by the propaganda that will be shown in his class room.
Respectfully Yours,
Another idea, if you keep your children home, is to read the constitution to them. Read the Bill of Rights. Tell them about our founding fathers. Give them a REAL history lesson. And explain to them that it is okay to question sometimes, when things just do not ‘feel’ right. And yes, you can even question the president. Because he is not above us. He is not someone we worship or work for. And again, refer to the constitution.
There is so much more I found that ties in with this day, and how our children are targeted. But it will have to wait until tomorrow.
But I leave you with this chilling statement from Hitler:
When an opponent declares, “I will not come over to your side,” I calmly say, “Your child belongs to us already… What are you? You will pass on. Your descendants, however, now stand in the new camp. In a short time they will know nothing else but this new community.”
